Snipe Hunting for the Cure

The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado (EFC) is hunting for the snipe. They are also hunting for the cure to epilepsy. Will they find what they are looking for? Hopefully with help.

Carol Fredrickson, area director, contacted Pegamoose Games for a contribution to "Snipe Hunt... Hunting for a Cure", a fundraising event to advance the search for the cure of epilepsy, and dedicated to the memory of Kristin Byrne.

Saturday, June 4, participants will track down the elusive "Snipe" in Expo Park in Aurora, CO. Snipe Hunting events are categorized by children, adults, and teams. Prizes will be awarded to Champion Snipe Hunters and for highest fundraisers.

Pegamoose Games contributed Snipe Hunt board games and t-shirts to the event. But, we want to do more! From now until July 31, 2005, Pegamoose Games will donate $1 per item bought in any order processed through the Pegamoose Games website or the Café Press -- Pegamoose Games website to the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado and their Hunt for the Cure. If you'd like to make a donation directly, please contact the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado website.

New News is Good News

Pegamoose Games has been laying low these past few months. But, that's not to say I haven't been busy.

'Zards has been re-revamped to make the game play a little easier and smoother. I'm looking for more people who'd like to help test this one. Pegamoose Games is also looking for groups of testers to help out with our other new game in the works, Rules are Played to be Broken. Anyone interested in helping test either/both of these games, please send us an email with the subject "I'm a Lab Moose!"

Jacks in a Box was submitted for 2005's Game Design contest at Boardgames.about.com. King's Corner, last year's entry, will have the rules cleaned up for a free download (Coming Soon!).

For a brief shining moment, I was the organizer for Meetup.com's Austin Boardgame group. I stepped down when they instigated monthly dues. People should only pay for the games, not the time to play them. That, and arranging a meetup was much like herding cats.

In other non-Pegamoose Game news... My wife and I are preparing the house for our next junior gamer (Arriving Fall 2005!). I have started frequenting Austin's sci-fi/fantasy writer's group, SlugTribe. I completed my first school year of mentoring RoboLab to fifth graders. ASMC's old script chair handed his crown to me, plus I will be the stage manager for the second year in a row. Speaking of performances, I will also be the stage manager for National Instrument's NI-Live talent show.

Whew... All that, and a bag of chips.

Knight's of the Dinner Table Review Snipe Hunt

Brian's Small Press Picks in Knight's of the Dinner Table (issue #96) reviews Snipe Hunt. Brian's opinion: "Snipe Hunt is a game with a humorous theme that is also a lot of fun to play."

In other Pegamoose Games news, Snipe Hunt will be available on the website for $7.50 (plus tax and shipping) from November 1st through the holidays. We have also set up Snipe Hunt at a Bulk Rate which is equivalent to our wholesale distributor services - (bundles of 10 Snipe Hunts for $50). If you need stocking stuffers or a white elephant gift, bulk rate Snipe Hunts are a great bargain.

Mid-October News

Pegamoose Games appeared at LinuCon October 9 & 10. Overall, attendance of this first-time convention was mild and the organization slightly chaotic. In general, people had fun despite the issues. We sold some Snipe Hunts, and those not buying one either jotted down the URL in PDAs or took a business card.

Aside from business at the Pegamoose Games table, I talked with a few of what I consider the Austin Sci-Fi convention regulars, like Lawrence Person, Rie Sheridan, and Willie Siros.

Steve Jackson Games printed and distributed 1000 limited edition "Heart of the Anomaly" Star Munchkin cards. Wil Wheaton, the Con's guest speaker, was kind enough to sign mine before playing the first of two games of Frag with the SJGames folk. SJGames set up a table for Frag between the Pegamoose Games and their own dealer tables. My wife missed Wil and the Frag-fest by about a half hour, but luckily, I signed her up to play in the LinuCon Celebrity Poker with Wil on Sunday.

I discussed ROBOLAB with an Austin ISD teacher and member of Austin's Robot Group. In September, I signed up to be a mentor for ROBOLAB at one of the local elementary schools. For those not familiar with ROBOLAB... National Instruments, LEGO, and Tufts University combined forces to create ROBOLAB, a service to introduce and teach engineering via programming robotic LEGOs to children of all ages. If you or someone you know is a teacher, I highly recommend getting the school involved with ROBOLAB.

I also chatted with a few participants in this year's National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). NaNoWriMo is like a marathon for writers in which the participants have the entire month of November to write a 50K word novel (about 175 pages) and submit it by midnight on November 30. Yours truly has decided to take part in NaNoWriMo for fun, for practice, and for discipline.

Pegamoose games is working on our next games. In fact, a prototype of 'Zards premiered at LinuCon. 'Zards is a trick-taking game (like hearts or spades) where wizards cast spells as tricks are taken. Let us know if you would like to help test 'Zards.

Aside from LinuCon, Marc Shayed from Gaming Report posted his review of Snipe Hunt. Thank you, Marc. Pegamoose Games appreciates your opinion.

In other news... My 16 month old daughter learned the Chicken Dance from Elmo on Sesame Street in honor of Oktoberfest. We also discovered a majority of Dr. Seuss's ABCs can be sung to the tune of the Whose Line Is It Anyway? Irish Drinking Song.

Happy Oktoberfest!
Doug Schwartz

The Flying Moose is Ready for Takeoff!

Pegamoose Games provide family-friendly fun at affordable prices.

AUSTIN, TX. July 15, 2004 - Pegamoose Games (www.pegamoosegames.com) opens for business July 2004 premiering Doug Schwartz’s first game, Snipe Hunt, a board game themed around the traditional camping activity of tracking the elusive Snipe bird. After college, Doug Schwartz and friends started their own game night, gathering each Wednesday night to relax and have fun midway through the work week. A friend and co-worker introduced him to CheapAss Games (CAG)(www.cheapass.com), the inspiration and inception of Pegamoose Games.

Doug Schwartz said, "I was on the CAG website looking at what other games they had to offer. On the About page, it mentioned if you have an idea, don’t send it to them, do it yourself. I took that as a challenge. Five years later, I’m ready to sell what is planned to be the first of many."

After several revisions, group testing, revamping, completely overhauling, more testing, and tweaking, Snipe Hunt is Pegamoose Games’ first product to hit the stores.

Snipe Hunt is both a board game and a card game. The game board is randomly determined by dealing a deck of cards into a square grid. The game is different each time the game board is set up, and changes while played. Players rotate or swap the game board cards to strategically outmaneuver opponents. Players take turns moving a pawn representing the Snipe, the objective of the game, and their own pawns through the ever-changing maze of the game board.

Pegamoose Games strives to provide entertainment at affordable prices. Other small-press, game companies keep costs down by only providing the game differences (cards, game boards, and rule books), while relying on other sources for gaming essentials (pawns, dice, play money, etc.). Pegamoose Games include as much as possible without inflating the cost. Snipe Hunt is packaged with all parts necessary to play the game, including a set of dice and pawns, and still keeps the cost down. If that’s not enough, additional games playable with the Snipe Hunt card sets and alternative rules to the Snipe Hunt are available on the website.
